What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?

I liked You Tube and Flickr the best from these activities.
How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?

It has taught me more tools to use and broadened my knowledge of devices and services that I may get questions from patrons about in the near future.
Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

Not really, I had some knowledge of many of the things we learned about or else there was something I already knew about that was comparable.
What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?

Maybe take a look at the order of the activities. It seemed to be a little more dull towads the middle.

And last but not least…
If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?

Yes, more than likely
How would you describe your learning experience in a few words or a few sentences, so we can share our successes and promote this program?

It was overall good. The toughest part was finding time to do the activities. If I had to do it again I wish that it would have been in a season other than summer because it was hard to do amidst summer reading.

I remember being trained on downloading books a few years ago, but I never used it since until now. It's a good thing to knwo how to do it. It's not as scary as I originially thought it might be.

Number 21 required me to discover some useful search tools for locating podcasts. I checked out several and and listen to some podcasts. I found them easy to use overall. I can see the appeal in some ways in that it gives another outlet for people to put out their ideas whithout having to spend a lot of time, money or use a lot of equipment in doing so.

Number 19 was about looking at any site from the Web 2.0 awards list. I chose "last.fm" a music site. It took me a little while to figure out to navigate through the site, but it seemed to have quite a bit music. Once I adjusted to the set-up, it wasn't too difficult to figure out.

Number 18 gave me the chance to look at online productivity tools. I had never heard of these before so it was a new experience for me. I explored Google Docs and found it fairly easy to use. I can certainly see the appeal in this fomat as opposed to software based tools. There are less steps devices to have to use.

Number 16 involved learning and discovering about Wiki's. I was slightly familiar with them before this activity. They are intersting in that it allows for various opinions and ideas to be added. This may good in libraries for sharing various program or display ideas. However you need people to participate (add to the Wiki) to keep it going. So in that way you could be at the mercy of others for it work or else you may end up writing a lot to keep it going.

Number fifteen was on Web 2.0 and the future of libraries. I read the article "Away from the icebergs" which dealt with actipating patron needs and spending more time going and finding out patron needs. I think the last decade has seen so many technological and information changes and many of those sources have changed or are changing quickly. With these changes come changes in patron needs. I think as librarians we have to read and study trends in what patrons use, but also anticipate needs. However I think many of us have already become at least somewhat aware of trends and changes because we see what gets used and what doesn't. However we do need to search and learn more to keep up with trends and changes.

I explored Technorati and learned how tags worked. I like how easy it is to look at a tag and find related material. Yet how it's realated can be broad depending on what and how many tags you use. I don't how many people search through tags. I have found that more people search you out through the comments you make on other people's blogs. I have used tags ona blog before, but never really kept up with doing it.

I listened to the tutorial for Del.icio.us and explored the site a bit. I eventually understood it, but it just didn't strike me as a real practical tool. Some people may use it, but I found it to be a little cumbersome. I guess it depends on how often you use as to whether it's really worthwhile. I am not sure if the casual user is going to be as likely to use it.

Number twelve required me to learn to use Rolly. I found it fairly easy to use.

I tried LibraryThing and was most impressed by how easy it was to use. One of the easiest sites I have used so far in 23 things. My interest in it is so-so, but it was simple and quick to use.

I tried Letter James and put a few saying on with the pictures they had. It was easy to use.
Next, I created my avatar through Photobucket and Meez.

I looked at Merlin and some other news feeds. I added several library related feeds as well as Merlin to my bloglines roll. There were several music and movie related feeds that interest me.

I liked Flickr color which allowed me to select a color and few a variety of pictures that were all of that color. This was interesting because some were of items that you would not normally associate with one another. Might be a good activity in teaching colors to young kids to show how different colors can show up in unexpected places.

Music trends and the music industry

Years ago the art and packaging of albums was a big part of marketing an album. Good album art could catch your eye and maybe you might buy it because something about the cover appealed to you. Now music can be downloaded making the need for album art slightly less important then when everyone had to buy a physical album or cd. Now ordering cd's can be done online which means less trips to the record store. It seems like many record stores have had to branch out and sell other items in addition to music items just to make a living. Another change is Myspace and how it relates to new music. Many bands now have Myspace pages and many of them have music for you to hear and or download. This probably dimishes the importance of demotapes that bands use to make. It also relies more on word of motuh to spread news of bands and I think that does happen. So even though music itself may be similar as it has always been; marketing, buying and listening formats have probably changed more in the last five years than in the previous fifteen years.
